Landis got a call back from an employer only an hour after she applied to a job on Honest Jobs

We all know that having a pending charge makes it even more difficult to find employment. Landis has two pending charges, however she got a call back from an employer only an hour after she applied to a job on Honest Jobs. She found a great job along with a supportive and loving community.

Read the whole interview with Landis here:

What experience did you have with the criminal justice system?

Landis: “This is actually my first time dealing with the system. I have two pending charges right now. The first is a second degree murder and the second pending charge is a vehicular homicide. I had just gotten out of jail and I was feeling just down in the dumps. I felt like giving up because I have an arrest and two pending charges on my record. I went to two job interviews previously and I heard nothing back. I was feeling discouraged. Like, what can I do? I've never been in a situation like this before, but something told me don't give up, just keep trying.”

What job searching experience did you have after you found Honest Jobs?

Landis: “I went on Google and searched “jobs that don't do background checks”, and that's when Honest Jobs popped up. I just gave it a shot. I made a profile and just decided to start applying. I heard back from the first person I applied for an hour later. So I went in and I just did a test run. I did the dishes and food prep. Afterwards, she asked me: “Do you think that this is something that you would like to do?”. It seemed like a good fit for me. Then, she said: “Welcome aboard. Welcome to the team!”

Tell us about your new job!

Landis: “I'm now working at Clancy’s Meats. I do dish washing and food prep. My pay is $14.50 an hour plus tips at the end of every week. I enjoy being there because there's so much to learn, especially about cooking. Also, the people there are supportive. I'm so grateful for the entire staff. They are just amazing. My employer said: “I want you to know that you are in a safe place. We've got your back.”

Would you recommend Honest Jobs to other formerly incarcerated job seekers?

Landis: “When I got out of jail I was feeling like I was on my own. But, after I found Honest Jobs, I felt like I wasn't really on my own. There are people out there that will give me a chance. It was something that was directed to me and my situation. It made me feel like there is a place where I can go, hope isn’t lost, you're not just out on your own. I'm so grateful for Honest Jobs. I just can't thank you enough, because it truly does help take you out of that dark place. I don't feel like a failure and I'm glad I didn't give up.”
